STG was developed for thick rigid plates. Two laser distance sensors scan the distance to the surface above and below a plate running through an O-frame. This will determine the thickness of the plate in a direct way.
Laser distance sensor works on the principle of optical triangulation. They traverse above and below the extruded plate and measure the distance to the plate’s surface.
These sensors are guided by linear guides and driven by a stepper motor.
The basis for the measurement is a calibration curve which is measured without an extruded plate against a calibration strip. This compares the value measured by the laser distance sensors and outputs it as a thickness value.
